Vital goal recalled as part of kit launch countdown
The club’s new Admiral kits will be launched on Sunday, 29 June and we continue our countdown with a number that remembers AFC Wimbledon’s dramatic final-day survival.
Ray Armfield recalled a tense 90 minutes for all Dons fans on Saturday, 27 April, 2013 and the emotional scenes afterwards are encapsulated by the photograph above of Jack Midson and victorious fans on the pitch.
18 – AFC Wimbledon’s Great Escape
Following all the hard work of famously regaining the Football League place that was franchised to Buckinghamshire nine years earlier, the last thing AFC Wimbledon wanted was to lose it again via relegation just two seasons later.
Despite having their final-day destiny in their own hands, the Dons were eighteen minutes away from a return to the Conference. However, up stepped that boy Jack Midson, who proved he could score with his right as well as his left foot to coolly slot home a vital penalty against Fleetwood. That goal regained the lead and after a nervy finale, it ultimately secured the three points needed for survival.
