Kind gesture swells budget

John's donation boosts transfer funds

Dons supporter John Martin has made a generous donation that would certainly have made his late father proud after he decided to contribute £5,000 towards the We Are Wimbledon Fund (WAWF).

John’s father Harry was the holder of a £5,000 Dons Trust bond that was due to be repaid back to his estate after he passed away. However, the DT bond has now been donated to the WAWF instead as John believes it was what his father would have wanted.

It now means that a £10,000 contribution will be made to the summer playing budget after lifelong fan Mike Richardson’s offer to match donations made during the month of June.

John said: “I’ve been a Wimbledon supporter since 1974 when my Dad used to take me to Plough Lane and pick me up after the match. Although he leaned more towards Spurs, my Dad really started supporting us when we became a fans-owned club. He had been a season ticket holder since 2002/03 and he got a lot of enjoyment out of following the club.

“Dad got the £5,000 bond not long after they were first issued and he never took any interest payment from it so he wanted to contribute to the club. When I realised that the £5,000 would effectively be changed into my name I thought that Dad would appreciate this donation going towards the team. He was 88 when he passed away last September and he was buried in his AFC Wimbledon scarf. We are a unique club with special supporters due to our history and everyone was so friendly towards my Dad when we attended matches together.”

AFC Wimbledon wishes to thank John for his kind gesture and Mike Richardson’s offer to match donations made during June has so far been well received.

Mike, who has been a Wimbledon supporter for over 50 years, has pledged to match every new £1 donation made by fans towards the playing budget this summer.

With the club’s Vice President promising to match up to £100,000 of new donations, it means that an extra £200,000 could be allocated to Neal’s transfer fund.
