Sweet 16 for the Dons

13 June 2014

Kit Launch countdown recalls memorable season

The club’s new Admiral kits will be launched on Sunday, 29 June and our countdown continues with a number that recalls another superb achievement in Wimbledon’s rich history.

Allen Batsford (pictured) led Wimbledon into the Football League in 1977 and a year earlier they won a league title with an approach that would be frowned upon in these days of squad rotation!

16 – Sweet sixteen

Allen Batsford’s all-conquering Wimbledon side retained their Southern League title and added the double of the Southern League Cup for good measure in a remarkable 1975/76 campaign. It was a tight-knit Dons squad with just sixteen players used in a punishing schedule of 60-plus matches in all competitions. With replays and second legs, it took the SW19 men eight games to win the League Cup for the first time since 1970. In the league they both started strongly – with eight consecutive victories in their opening nine fixtures – and finished unbeaten in their last 14 matches to win the Championship by eight points.
