Dream day for a Dons fan

Pictures that Rob will treasure forever

Rob Cura enjoyed the ultimate experience for an AFC Wimbledon fan when he marked an appearance alongside his heroes with a goal and the pictures above show exactly what it meant to him.

As we’ve recently featured plenty of your photographs of 2013/14 on the official website, we felt that Rob’s dream day – the Dons fan won an auction to play for Wimbledon FC in the charity match – certainly warranted inclusion.

As a long-time Dons supporter, Rob’s goalscoring appearance at the Cherry Red Records Stadium was worth every penny.

“It meant absolutely everything to me,” said Rob. “It's a lifetime's dream achieved because I've followed the club since 1978. I’ve got about 50 photographs from the day, including a timeline of the build-up to my goal and the celebrations – I’ll never forget it.

“It was a proper goal too. I was screaming for the ball to Damian Francis, but he decided to shoot himself rather than squaring it. The goalkeeper saved it, but I managed to steer it in. It was a real ‘poacher’s goal’ and I don’t think Gary Lineker would have scored it!

“I previously played defensive midfield years ago, but I asked Neal Ardley if I could play further forward as I didn’t think I would get too much of the ball. Thankfully, he was okay with that and I enjoyed playing with Andy Clarke. Andy was really nice and helped me out a lot.”
