Midfielder on signing a new contract
Jake Nicholson says he’s determined to make the most of his opportunity at AFC Wimbledon after putting a tough year behind him.
Since being released by Tottenham Hotspur last summer, Jake went all the way up to Scotland to play for Greenock Morton and he saw other potential moves fail to work out.
However, the midfielder has been rewarded for his perseverance with a contract at the Dons after impressing Wimbledon’s management team during the back end of last season.
Speaking to Rob Cornell during an interview for Dons Player, Jake said: “It’s been a tough year for me after leaving Spurs. When you are out of contract and looking for a club it is hard. You have to stay mentally strong and believe that anything can happen. It was a tricky time of the season for me to come in during February. You don’t hear of many players getting signed then.
“Thankfully, I’ve now been given an opportunity to get a pre-season in and a full season under my belt. Wimbledon is a big club with a lot of supporters. I feel comfortable and at home here, which is the main thing for any footballer. If you feel comfortable at a football club then you can really crack on.”
At the age of just 21, Jake believes his best years as a footballer will come at AFC Wimbledon.
“I’m still young and not at my peak yet,” added Jake. “I just want to give my all at this football club. I can be a favourite with the fans and go on to achieve good things, but the main thing is to go on and achieve as part of the team. It’s great to sign a new deal here after having a couple of months at the end of last season to get back into the swing of English football.
“The management team have played at the highest level and they are just trying to pass on their knowledge to us every day in training. I’m really hopeful that we can have a good season and it should be exciting times ahead.”
