Mark Robinson says Dons are capable of progressing
AFC Wimbledon Under-18s have the incentive of securing a place in the FA Youth Cup third round if they can win at Gillingham tonight (7.00 pm start) and Mark Robinson has called for greater focus from his players after a disappointing set of results.
The young Dons were beaten 4-0 by Barnet last week, but they could earn a home tie against Burnley if they can bounce back to form.
Speaking to Rob Cornell during an interview for Dons Player, Mark Robinson said: “A modern trait with young players now is that outside influences get into their heads. They have to think about what got them where they are now and the word ‘focus’ is important. The players have to put everything to the back of their minds and get on with the task in hand. If they do that then we can be a match for anyone. Once we got the first goal in the last round we played some good stuff, but since then the performances have not been good enough.
“I should not be talking about a lack of desire and that we could be playing Burnley. We are more than capable of winning tonight if we are on it.”
Striker Dan Agyei has struck 20 goals so far this season and Mark added that he has shown a great attitude to become a better player.
“Dan has not stepped up to the Under-21s because George Oakley and Chace Jacquart are up there,” said Mark. “But he has got himself into the zone and has got on with what he needs to do. He’s made a huge improvement, but there’s still more to come from him. He is an example of a young player cracking on and focusing on what he needs to do. The results are there for all to see.”
AFC Wimbledon Under-18 squad for tonight: Billy Bishop, Will Mannion, Callum Wilson, Taylor Roles, Ryan Sweeney, Ben Harrison, Reece Williams-Bowers, Jason Stripp, Danny Gallagher, Alfie Egan, , Egli Kaja, Dan Agyei, Reece Batchelor, Dan Ano, Billy Frost, Neset Bellikli.
