Boost for Wimbledon ahead of tie at Bristol City

The Dons received a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Area Quarter-Final tie at Bristol City with an award for their memorable victory in the last round.

Wimbledon’s 3-2 away victory at League One Milton Keynes last month earned the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Team of the Round prize for the Area Second Round.

Despite a first-half equaliser from Ade Azeez, Wimbledon were 2-1 down at half-time and it needed goals from substitutes Sean Rigg and Bayo Akinfenwa to move Neal Ardley’s men into the last-16.

As well as winning a trophy, Wimbledon will also receive a prize of Johnstone’s Paint product to use on a club project.

Neal Ardley said: “It was a big win and the manner of the victory – coming from behind away to a club in a division higher – made it all the more special. It was a terrific performance from the players and it’s a great feeling to win the Johnstone’s Paint Team of the Round award.

“It’s given everybody a lot of confidence to hopefully have a long run in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and push to go to Wembley. We could not have had it any harder so far. Southend at home was a great game as we came back with 10 men and then we were brilliant at Milton Keynes. This one tomorrow will be even tougher.”

Wimbledon will now be hoping to repeat their heroics as they prepare for another away tie tomorrow at League One leaders Bristol City with a place in the last-eight of the competition up for grabs.
