Wimbledon under-21s defeated

AFC Wimbledon under-21s surrendered a two goal lead, to go down 3-2 to hosts Cambridge United in their second Development League game of the season.

Wimbledon raced into a strong position before the break as Ade Azeez struck twice in the 10th and 34th minutes, with Neal Ardley having travelled with the young squad and watching on from pitch side.

However, under-21s coach Alan Reeves lost his captain Will Nightingale after a challenge just before the break that left the central defender requiring crutches to leave the training ground after, suffering from a swollen foot. Nightingale's central defensive partner Ryan Sweeney looked solid at the back first half and Tom Beere again ran the show in midfield. He was, however, forced to depart during the second half due to suspected cramp.

Cambridge emerged a better side in the second half and turned the game around with goals from set-pieces from Harry Lennon (58th minute) and Sam Whittall (75th minute) to level matters. Ryan Bird got the winner for United in injury time.

A full match report and reaction from Alan Reeves will appear on the website tomorrow.
