Bayo: more to come

9 October 2014

Striker says that support is driving him on

Bayo Akinfenwa says his move to AFC Wimbledon has surpassed his own expectations, but he believes the current squad is capable of better.

Wimbledon’s match-winner at MK has five goals to his name in a Dons shirt and he’s played nearly every minute of the League 2 season so far.

“I did say on the day I joined that AFC Wimbledon and Akinfenwa is a great fit and it really is,” Bayo told Dons Player. “I’m enjoying myself so much and I hope people can see that by the way I’m playing. I’m getting 90 minutes under my belt all the time and now I’m scoring goals. I kept the faith and the management, players and fans stayed behind me when I wasn’t scoring. It is surpassing my expectations. I’ve always tried to give my all, but it is human nature that you always have a bit more to give.

“When the manager and fans have faith in you, then you don’t want to let them down – it makes you go that extra yard. I’ve virtually played every minute of the league campaign and I’m just trying to repay the faith that the manager has shown in me.

“The manager has assembled a great squad here and there is a really good togetherness. I still feel though that there’s more to come from this squad and myself. Hopefully, we are sitting here at the end of this season talking about us doing big things.”

after Tuesday’s win.commentsDespite the euphoria of Tuesday’s thrilling JPT win, Bayo is far from resting on his laurels and he referred to the visit of League 2 leaders Bury as a “massive” game in post-match

However, Bayo’s partnership with Matt Tubbs has already yielded 13 goals in all competitions – and he’s delighted to be catching up!

“Matt was carrying me for a good two months, but now I’m providing my share,” added Bayo. “I still think Matt will get 20 goals this season because he’s one of the best finishers I’ve ever played with. I’m scoring a few now, but the main thing is that our partnership is working well and long may that continue.”
