Neal seeks strong finish

Manager sets target for remainder of 2014/15

Neal Ardley will ensure there is no let-up for his squad during the League 2 run-in and he has set a target of at least 60 points this season.

The Wimbledon manager told Dons Player that he will resist the temptation to blood more youngsters with Oxford United up next on Saturday.

With the Dons currently on 54 points, at least a draw will mean a highest points total from a single season since Wimbledon returned to the Football League.

“We have produced a lot of academy players this season,” said Neal. “We have been brave enough to play them so we don’t feel that we have to do it now. They will only play if they are ready. I have a lot of players who will be out of contract and are playing for their futures and we want to finish the season strongly.

“We do not want the fans to watch a team that is just seeing the season out. There are a lot of big clubs below us and clubs fighting for their lives and we are not one of those. We should not take that for granted.

“We will push as hard as we can and see if we can get our highest placed finish. We want to move into the top-12 and see if we can get 60 points-plus. We will keep driving the players hard for that.”

James Shea started light training last week by doing handling drills with Ashley Bayes and Neal Ardley expects him to be back before the end of the season after he made good progress from the broken ankle he suffered at Hartlepool.

“He is slowly getting there,” added Neal. “He is starting to progress to kicking now and in the next week we will see where he is. Hopefully, he can get himself back in before the end of the season.”
