Young Dons gear up for competitive season
AFC Wimbledon warmed up for their first match in the Final Third Development League against AFC Bournemouth on 8 September with a victory against Merstham U-21s today.
Second half goals from George Oakley and Dom Bongo (pictured) earned a 2-0 win for Wimbledon U-21s in a match that took place at the training ground.
Christian Toonga got in some match practice at a time when the club is still awaiting international clearance to play him in the first-team and Tom Beere stepped up his fitness after injury.
Coach Alan Reeves was pleased with their contributions on the day.
“Christian did very well because he has not had a game for a few weeks,” said Alan. “He showed a great attitude and a lot of quality. Due to injuries Tom had to fill in at centre-back. It is a fitness process for him, but he won his headers and worked hard.
“Overall, I could not fault the effort and endeavour of the players. We just need to brush up on a few technical things, but it didn’t do us any favours playing on such a narrow pitch. In the second half we were much better and scored with two well-taken goals.”
Oakley struck the first on the hour with a clinical finish after he was put clean through and Bongo sealed it 15 minutes from time.
