A first County Cup in 10 years for Dons Ladies

AFC Wimbledon Ladies will resume league action this Sunday on the back of an historic achievement after earning a place in the Surrey Women’s Cup Final.

A storming 5-0 win against South Park meant that Dons Ladies reached their first final in a decade and they will face Carshalton Athletic on Thursday, 16 April at Leatherhead FC (7.30 pm kick-off).

Reaching the final offers fine reward for a new-look squad that has been expertly assembled by manager Chris Lyons in his first season. Dons Ladies will be aiming to reinforce their challenge in the London & South East Regional Women’s Premier Division as they go into Sunday’s match at home to Eastbourne in third place with games in hand on teams above.

The Dons wasted no time putting pressure on South Park in last weekend’s semi-final and they were rewarded with a goal just 90 seconds in when Emma Keady converted a Sian Wylie cross.

However, the Dons failed to take several more first half opportunities and South Park were just 1-0 down at half-time.

That all changed once top scorer Caz Bisson hit top form though as she struck a quick-fire double to make it 3-0 before the hour.

An intended cross by Wylie ended up finding the back of the net to make it four, but there was nothing lucky about the fifth goal for Wimbledon. Wylie produced an excellent solo run, before finishing clinically to seal a great day for Dons Ladies.

The final whistle signalled ecstatic scenes and now Chris Lyons’ side will be aiming to boost their league chances before a chance to clinch silverware in mid-April.
