Dons Ladies clinch double

18 May 2015

A significant achievement for AFC Wimbledon Ladies

Manager Roland Harding saluted an “unprecedented double” for AFC Wimbledon Ladies after the club’s development side won the John Greenacre Memorial Trophy.

A 3-1 win at Ashford Town FC’s Robert Parker Stadium rounded off a hugely impressive season for the Dons as they added more silverware after winning the league.

I would like to give a special thank-you to our team sponsor, Assertive Trading, for their generous support this season.”  I'm really proud to have managed this fantastic team. “In the league we won 17 and lost just once out of 20 fixtures and in the cup we beat the top three sides from the division above us,” said Roland. “We have earned the right to be recognised as double winning champions and all the credit goes to the players and coaching staff, who have all worked relentlessly to achieve this success.

With Camden the winners of the Greater London Women’s Football League's top division - a tier above the Dons – it was always going to be a tough challenge for Wimbledon. And so it turned out with Camden taking the lead 10 minutes before half-time.

A spirited second-half response followed from Wimbledon and they were level five minutes after the break. However, it would not be a cup final for the Dons without a vital penalty save and goalkeeper Ashleigh dived low to her left to make a fine stop that earned extra-time.

Wimbledon proved strongest during the additional 30 minutes with a goal in each half earning more silverware in a season that promises so much for the club’s future.
