Pioneer of supporters trust movement helped Dons
AFC Wimbledon was today saddened to hear about the death of Brian Lomax, a man widely recognised for starting the supporter ownership structure in the UK.
Brian played a key role in rescuing Northampton Town by forming the Cobblers Trust in 1992 – the first supporters trust in Britain – and he was a great help to AFC Wimbledon during the club’s formation in 2002.
Dons Trust Chairman, Matthew Breach, said: “Brian was one of the key contributors to the formation of AFC Wimbledon, working behind the scenes to help with setting up the club and our unique ownership structure.
"His effort in putting supporters at the heart of football started before his work with us and over the last 30 years he has made an enormous contribution to furthering the cause of football fans on many fronts. He will be sorely missed.”
In 1999, Brian was instrumental in establishing Supporters Direct, becoming its first managing director and later chairman.
A more in-depth tribute to Brian will appear in the match day programme for Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday 21 November.
