Wilson cleared for first round tie
Neil Cox today confirmed that on-loan goalkeeper Ben Wilson has been given the green light to play in Saturday’s FA Cup tie against National League leaders Forest Green Rovers.
The Dons have received permission from parent club Cardiff to play Wilson, who has been on the winning side in all three of his loan appearances for Wimbledon.
Sean Rigg, who missed the Hartlepool win due to a dead leg, is also back in contention to potentially play against the club where he came through the youth ranks.
Neil Cox was speaking during an interview with Rob Cornell for Dons Player and interviews with captain Barry Fuller and Karleigh Osborne are now on our premium channel.
Neil was quick to point out that Wimbledon will be treating Saturday’s opponents with the same respect as any League 2 rivals.
“As soon as the draw was made we watched a couple of DVDs on Forest Green and got scouting reports on them,” Cox said. “It is a difficult game for us and like a normal League 2 match. We are going to pick our strongest squad available. We will be going for it and trying to win the game so that we can get a run going like last year. We don’t want to be a team on the receiving end of an upset and on the back page on a Sunday.
“Ben Wilson has been given the all-clear to play and that’s good news because he has come in and done really well. Sean also comes back into the squad after recovering from a dead leg.”
Neil Cox added that he has sensed plenty of hunger and desire among the squad to do well in the FA Cup again this season.
“The boys have looked forward to coming into training and they knew that Tuesday was going to be a hard day,” said Cox. “This morning we had an 11 v 11 game and the players were running around like schoolboys. This is the FA Cup and it’s everyone’s dream to play in it. We have had three wins in a row and we want to keep that going.”
