Be a part of an exciting course at new venue
We are delighted to launch a new programme with Southfields Academy that offers young footballers a chance to continue playing and further their education at the same site.
Our link-up with Southfields Academy means new recruits will be prepared for competitive matches against the likes of Chelsea and Fulham by UEFA qualified coaches at a facility that played host to the Premier League 2015/16 launch in August.
The same venue will also be utilised for classroom activities with young people having the opportunity to study for a BTEC in Sports Level 3.
The AFC Wimbledon Football & Education Programme is aiming to attract around 20 youngsters for the 2016/17 season.
Trial dates will be staged on the following dates:
• Sunday (PM) on 13 December at Southfields Academy
• Sunday (AM) on 20 December at Southfields Academy
Head of AFC Wimbledon’s College Programme, Michael Hamilton, said: “It’s great for us to launch an exciting new course at Southfields Academy. It means excellent transport links for potential recruits as they will be able to train and play matches on the same site as doing their studies in the classroom. They will train three times a week and play matches against students from other professional clubs. It’s a great opportunity for young people to combine playing football with their studies.”
Successful applicants typically join the first year of the programme in the school term directly following GCSE exams (year 12). The Football & Education Programme runs for a two year period - during this time students will study a BTEC in Sports Level 3 (dependent on GCSE grades) while receiving approximately 6-9 hours per week in active training from UEFA qualified Academy coaches.
