Manager issues challenge to young pair
Neal Ardley has urged his young midfielders to stake a claim for first-team starts this season.
The Wimbledon manager wants 20-year-old Tom Beere (pictured) and Christian Toonga, who has not yet turned 18, to put pressure on Dannie Bulman and Jake Reeves for midfield spots.
Speaking during an interview for Dons Player ahead of Morecambe tomorrow, Neal said: “Dannie and Jake have got the slots at the moment. We are pushing Tom in training and we are trying to get him in games for the Under-21s to step-up and say ‘pick-me’. He came into the first-team earlier this season and did very well, but then he got injured. After getting back into the squad, Tom got injured again. It is difficult because circumstances have gone against him, but it’s his job to stay on top of it.
“I want Christian and Tom to be pushing and for both of them to be saying to Dannie and Jake ‘if you slip up, I am in your place’. That’s their job and we have spoken to both of them about it.”
