Defender warns there must be no let-up after away victories

Paul Robinson believes that the strength of Neal Ardley’s squad makes Wimbledon well equipped to secure a play-off spot, but he says the players must build on two excellent away performances.

The experienced defender, who knows what promotion is all about after going up via the play-offs with Millwall in 2010, reckons that victory at Plymouth showed what his team are capable of against one of the best sides in League 2.

“It’s a squad game and it was important to have two substitutes coming on like Bayo Akinfenwa and Ade Azeez,” said Robinson. “With Rhys Murphy also on the bench, it shows how far the squad has come. We’ve put ourselves in a good position now and we have a great opportunity. It’s important now that we build on it in the games against Crawley and Dagenham. We have to make sure we are ready for these games.

“The boys are buzzing and we’ve shown what we are capable of now. It’s about us taking that forward for the next few games. We have to make sure that it’s not just a possibility of doing something, but ensure we step forward as a group to achieve our aims.

“It was a big result for us (at Plymouth). It was not one of our most fluent performances and we had to grind it out. We had to stay strong and we had a little bit of luck when we needed it. Kelle Roos made good saves and we defended well when it was necessary. We hung on in there and we are always liable to get something at the other end.”

Robinson had special praise for Akinfenwa after his match-winning contribution at Plymouth with last season’s top scorer having had less game-time in this campaign.

“I’m really pleased for Bayo,” added Robinson. “Bayo has had to be patient because he’s not played as much as he would have liked, but he came on and got us a vital three points. He is a good character, great amongst the lads, and keeps the boys together.”
