AFC Wimbledon players and staff provided Christmas cheer for young patients at St George’s Hospital by presenting them with gifts on Tuesday.

Organised by the AFC Wimbledon Foundation, manager Neal Ardley and his squad dashed off after training to the facility in Tooting to put smiles on the faces of children.

AFC Wimbledon Foundation Director Kay Skelton said: “I was delighted with the response from Neal and his squad. Every single present was paid for by them and in total we gave out over 100 gifts. As always, it was an absolute pleasure to see the players making a difference at such a tough time for the young children and their families. The hospital staff and families were so welcoming and we thank them for making our visit possible. We hope to do it again next year.”

It’s become a pre-Christmas tradition for the club to visit St George’s and Wimbledon defender Jon Meades was delighted to do his bit.

“To be in hospital at this time of year is not ideal,” Jon said. “It is a difficult time for the children and their families so we came here to spread a bit of joy and put a smile on their faces. It was amazing because it puts things in perspective. Football is quite pressurised, but it’s not comparable to what they are going through. Just to see them happy reminds you of what is important.”
