Wide-man aims to help the Dons push on
George Francomb says he’s determined to play his part in maintaining the feel-good factor at AFC Wimbledon after recent events.
During a season when he’s surpassed 100 appearances for Wimbledon, Francomb welcomed news that the club had been given planning permission to move back to Plough Lane. The 24-year-old wide-man has also taken a keen interest in the superb FA Youth Cup run of our Under-18s.
Speaking during an interview for Dons Player with Rob Cornell ahead of the Mansfield match, Francomb said: “At the moment it is all positive. We’ve had a few good results now and the youth team went up to Newcastle and won, which was unbelievable. With that and the news about the new stadium it shows how far the club has come. It’s all positive and hopefully that carries on during the second-half of the season. If we can improve our results slightly from the first-half of the season we should be there or thereabouts.
“I felt that I started the season well, but then had a little dip in form. After that I got back into the team. I know my job in the team and I feel that I do that well. I am a cog in the machine going forward. We want to try and get to the play-offs and take it from there. I am just happy to be a part of that and I want to do my best for the team.
“We have worked on what they (Mansfield) are good at. We have been making sure that we nail down set-pieces and things like that. We want to ensure that we get off to a winning start back after a break.”
On the impressive run of our Under-18s to the last-16 of the FA Youth Cup, Francomb added: “We’ve had a few of them training with us and they always apply themselves well. They are obviously doing something right! They have beaten some good teams along the way and hopefully at the next game against Chelsea or Man United there will be a few thousand watching them. I am sure some of us boys will go down to watch and it should be a good evening.”
