A fantastic gesture from Newcastle hero Peter Beardsley rounded off a wonderful achievement for AFC Wimbledon in the FA Youth Cup at St James’ Park last night.

The former England international, who is now a coach in the Newcastle academy set-up, watched the young Dons win 2-1 and afterwards he visited the away dressing room to offer his congratulations.

“I take my hat off to you because I thought you were fantastic,” said Peter. “I work for Newcastle and I want my team to win, but it would have been an injustice if you had not won. It was a pleasure to watch every one of you from start to finish. You deserved everything that you got and good luck in the next round.”

Of course, Beardsley was a part of the Liverpool side beaten by Wimbledon in the 1988 FA Cup Final.
