A celebration of our relationship with worldwide group

AFC Wimbledon and the “Nerdfighters” came together recently to celebrate the power of community values in an event at the club that was a huge success.

The Con4Awesome meeting here was the first Nerdfighter conference staged in Europe and it extended our links with the worldwide community group, which was inspired by our sponsor John Green.

Since John’s collaboration with his brother Hank to create a You Tube channel in 2007 called vlogbrothers, an international fanbase known collectively as “Nerdfighters” has grown with people around the world coming together to get involved in charity projects.

That unique spirit and the “Don’t Forget To Be Awesome” (DFTBA) mantra was captured at AFC Wimbledon recently.

Commercial Executive Ivor Heller said: “I have never been in a room with so many positive people. Once again, the influence of John Green has been a force for good at AFC Wimbledon. We have created so many new fans from this group. We look forward to hosting the event again next year!”

As part of the day, Ivor gave a passionate speech about the history of Wimbledon FC and the remarkable rise of AFC Wimbledon. A total of 65 attendees were given a tour of the stadium, including walking on the pitch and posing for photographs in the John Green Stand. Nerdfighters also watched a video message posted by Hank Green and took part in sporting activities, before enjoying a meal and music in the evening.

Organiser Sophie Waldron said: “I had the incredible honour of leading the community that organised the event. I have never felt more proud as the event was a raging success and everyone left with giant smiles on their faces.

“The Nerdfighters and AFC Wimbledon are both communities that value equality, encourage enthusiasm, and above all else are run by and for their members. When I arrived in London almost two years ago I never knew anyone, but now I’m a part of these two amazing families for the rest of my life. I’m a Womble ‘til I die!”

It was an important charity event too as funds raised were donated to The Foundation to Decrease WorldSuck, the charity of Nerdfighteria formed by the Green brothers.
