Interview with winger about joining Wimbledon
New recruit Chris Whelpdale’s career has been decorated by promotions and he says that his ambition to achieve things with Wimbledon was a key factor in joining the club.
Since facing Wimbledon in the Ryman League back in 2006/07 with Billericay, Chris has experienced success with Peterborough United and Gillingham, before spending two seasons with Stevenage.

“I’ve played against Wimbledon quite a few times now,” said Chris. “Back in 2006 I played against Wimbledon for Billericay and from then onwards I had to wait a couple of years for you guys to catch me up! For Wimbledon to get promoted six times is phenomenal really. It’s a great achievement and hopefully I can play a part now.
“I’ve had a few good achievements in my career so far. When I went to Peterborough from Billericay we got back-to-back promotions and I’ve experience of playing in League 1. I am looking now to go on and achieve another promotion here.
“There were a few clubs interested in me, but when I spoke to the manager about coming here it was all really positive and I really liked what he had to say. I’m really pleased to come here.”
Chris added that he’s a direct winger who likes to attack full-backs as much as possible, but he can play in other positions if required.
“I’m a winger who likes to get at players and get crosses in, but I think I can also mix it up,” added Chris. “I can come inside and play narrow. Most of my career I’ve played on the right, but I’ve also experience of playing in other positions, including on the left, in midfield, and up top as part of a front three.”
The full six-minute interview with Chris is now on Dons Player, along with Neal Ardley’s thoughts on his latest addition.
