FOCUS ON………………Walsall
Our first fixture is against a club who came so close to being a Championship club in 2016/17. Jon Whitney, who originally joined Walsall as physio in 2003, took temporary control of team matters after Sean O’Driscoll’s departure in March, and he so nearly guided the club to promotion. Missing out on an automatic spot by just one point with Burton Albion taking second place, Walsall were beaten in the play-offs by Barnsley. However, it was enough to warrant Whitney's appointment as permanent manager.
Walsall have already made promising additions for 2016/17 with midfielder Erhun Oztumer signing from Peterborough United and Belgian Florent Cuvelier will return for a third spell with Walsall when his contract with Sheffield United expires on July 1. Bermudan midfielder Kacy Milan Butterfield is regarded as a great signing for the future.
Located in the West Midlands, Walsall have played at the Bank’s Stadium (formerly Bescot Stadium) since 1990. Walsall previously played their home fixtures at Fellows Park for 104 years. The current ground has a capacity of 11,300.
