Tom not quite ready for Blackpool after positive return

Assistant Manager's update ahead of match at Bloomfield Road

31 August 2017

Neil Cox today said that Tom Soares had made an encouraging return to full training, but Saturday’s match at Blackpool will come too soon for him.

The experienced midfielder missed the final month of last season after having an ankle operation and he’s struggled to shake off a thigh injury during this campaign.

However, Neil told our iFollow channel that Tom had made a positive impact this week and he also reported that Darius Charles is making good progress after recovering from a knee operation.

“Tom is back in full training, which is great news,” said Neil. “He missed a bit of time at the end of last season and has been struggling with a thigh injury, but he has been in training all week. He looked really sharp and hopefully we can get him in the Under-23s match next week (on Wednesday at Bournemouth). That will be a big positive for everybody.

“Jon Meades is still a bit off, but starting to work really hard. Hopefully, Darius will be back training next week. We just have to make sure that he gets through the end of this week and hopefully he can be back next week.”

Following two successive victories, Neil said that confidence is high among the squad with Blackpool up next and he believes a real team ethic is starting to build.

“We’ve been trying to work hard on getting partnerships going and getting players used to playing in a different way,” added Neil. “The boys have taken it on board, especially in the last two games. We’ve looked really good going forward and it looks like we are getting a group together who are working hard for each other, which is what we needed.

“Everyone pulled together against Doncaster. In the first-half we did not play well, but we did not look like we were going to concede because the players all defended well. That’s what we have to do all year – defend and attack as a team. It worked out well on Saturday.”
