goal in all competitions drew him level in the scoring stakes with Dominic Poleon and Tom Elliott, but helping the team to a victory was the priority as it ended a run of six games without a win.thLyle’s 12
Speaking during an interview which can be viewed on our official You Tube channel via the link above, Lyle said: “If the squad becomes fractious it creates problems. I’m not sure the manager has mentioned it, but we’ve done a lot of soul-searching recently and it’s not been easy for the group. The fans have stuck with us. Fair enough, they have had their moans at times, but they have never deserted us and that means a lot for the group. It is brilliant to be respected, loved, and revered, as the fans do with us. We have to say thank-you to them. Hopefully, between now and the end of the season we can put some more results together so that they can be proud of us.
“It is brilliant now for us to have won a game. It has been a sticky period of games and we had not been quite getting the results we had deserved, but that’s football. Walsall are a good team, they came and passed the ball around well, but we probably deserved to win.”
The victory came thanks to a goal that Lyle admitted was a bit fortuitous, but he said his first home goal since Millwall on 2 January meant a lot to him.
“I have struggled in the last month to five weeks,” added Lyle. “I’ve struggled for form and goals, but the fans have been brilliant, they have stuck behind me and not once have they got on my back. It’s nice to have that respect from them and from the boys and staff too.
“Tom won the first header, ‘Barchy won the second header, and then I did my best impression of Dennis Bergkamp! I dummied it, sent their left-back an absolute treat, and stuck it in the back of the net. I am not going to have anyone tell me any different! We’ve been missing that bit of luck recently, but we got that on Saturday, and I was glad to be in the right place at the right time.”
