Tom: we kept on fighting

Interview with goal hero after battling draw

Tom Elliott said it was vital to start the New Year with a much-improved performance after recent disappointments.

Speaking during an interview for Dons Player after the 2-2 draw against Millwall, Tom stated the importance of getting back to the form and style that had AFC Wimbledon in the top-10 for much of this season.

“It was extremely important because in the last two games we had been a bit below par,” said the towering striker. “We probably had to get back to how we used to play; be more appreciative of passing and bringing each other into play, rather than just lumping it. We got sucked into that and there was no reason for it. We beat Port Vale 4-0 and we just have to get back to what we do best.

“We have a decent record at home. I would say that we dominated the game, but only got a draw. Millwall are a big strong team, they know what they are about, and have two good forwards, but I think we were the better team. We went behind twice and both times we came back into it. We kept on fighting and we could have nicked it.”

However, Tom was quick to pay tribute to strike partner Lyle Taylor afterwards and the support he’s received from Wimbledon fans since joining the Dons.

“Lyle had been on a bit of a drought for him and it was good for him to get back scoring,” added Tom. “It was a beautiful cross and I did my best to try and get on the end of it – luckily it has gone in. I love celebrating with the fans when I score because they are always behind me. They are always getting me going, even if I am having an off day. I really appreciate that and I know the boys do too. The fans have been amazing. The boys understand what we have to do in this league. It is 2017 now, we have to cut out the mistakes from the end of last year, and go on.”
