The start of a remarkable journey

Your memories from 2002/03

7 June 2017

With just two weeks to go until League One fixture release day, we asked supporters on social media to select their favourite game of AFC Wimbledon's very first season in 2002/03.

Despite the passage of time, your responses showed that the memories are still particularly vivid as a remarkable journey started with a debut season in the Combined Counties League.

The picture above shows Keith Ward being congratulated after his winner in the first league match at Sandhurst Town and he is a player still revered by those fans who followed us back then.

Below are a selection of responses we received via the official club Twitter page.

@HayDonMeadow - Sandhurst Town away was my best game, though there was so many. That was the day it became a reality and history was made.

@EssexWomble - Sandhurst (away) - first game in CCL. When the dream became reality.

@KentWomble - Our first home game v Chipstead (even though we lost). Full house with 000's locked out, the roar when Coops equalised and familiar faces.

@Edd93Paul - 3-2 at home versus Cove, my first competitive game. Lee Sidwell scored a late winner. Neil Robson smashed in a banger as well #wewonitonetime

@Dons_Sayer_WDON - Ha! Me too! Cracking goal from Robson from distance. Took me back to my early days at Plough Lane too, in terms of atmosphere. #AFCW

@nevilinski - My first game at KM. North Greenford Utd and we won 4-3. 'Wardy' was rampant.

@deafjonty - Although it was pre-season, the first goal we ever scored at Bromley. The way the team and fans celebrate showed we were a club worth it.

@afcwnick14 - The 'coming of age' 3-2 win versus Wallingford, featuring a great last ditch clearance off the line from Keith Ward.
