Double joy for George

20 March 2017

Long-serving player interviewed after his return

George Francomb was pleased to be back out on the pitch playing his part in another positive result for AFC Wimbledon after a double celebration in midweek.

On the same day that his partner gave birth to baby Florence, George was keeping in touch with events at the Cherry Red Records Stadium as Wimbledon beat Milton Keynes 2-0.

“My missus was induced last Monday as she was 13 days overdue so that was why I was not available for the game on Tuesday night,” said Francomb. “She gave birth on Tuesday morning and it was the best day of my life. We were still in hospital in the evening and I was just following the game on my phone. I was checking the Twitter feed and I was buzzing when I saw that we had gone 1-0 up, then 2-0 up. To finally see that we had got the win made it a great day all around.”

George, who first signed for AFC Wimbledon on loan in August 2012, added that it was important for the squad to earn a good result at Fleetwood after the highs of midweek.

“The three points in midweek was such a good result for the club, but we wanted to make sure that we did not just come to Fleetwood and go through the motions,” said George. “We wanted to put on a similar performance to what we produced at Scunthorpe and Bolton. It was not quite that, but we at least dug in and stuck in there for a 0-0 draw.

“Every team goes through a sticky patch. We had a really solid period after our start to the season. We were getting a lot of good results leading up to Christmas, but for whatever reason it was not clicking for us after that. We managed to stick together and we have come out of the other side now. In the last few weeks we’ve been really putting in some good performances and getting results so that is pleasing.

“We have got to try and surpass 60 points. If we can do that, it is an unbelievable first season in League One. We will keep striving for that and see where we end up.”
