Neil: game plan worked

Post-match reaction after Fleetwood

Neil Cox praised the players for adapting to tactics that nullified promotion contenders Fleetwood Town on their own patch today.

Speaking during a post-match interview for Dons Player after the 0-0 draw, our assistant manager said: “We defended well as a team with a game plan that involved showing them out wide. With three at the back we tried to keep the ball better. Will Nightingale came into the team as he was unfortunate to miss out in the last game and we chopped and changed it a bit to keep it fresh. The front two defended well to start off with. Tyrone Barnett had worked really hard in training so we gave him a chance to come in. We did not let them play through the middle of the park and the three in midfield worked really hard at that. We only really had one day in training to make it work, but I can’t remember James Shea making too many saves.”

Neil sensed an element of disappointment among the squad after late pressure almost yielded all three points for the Dons.

“It is a good performance to come away with a point against a team who were second in the league and in great form,” added Neil. “In the first-half we had to set our stall out and defend really well. We did not have many chances, but we had the ball a lot. We changed the formation with 20 minutes to go, brought on fresh legs, and we went at them a little bit more. We were a little bit disappointed not to take all three points, but after the week we’ve had we would have taken a point beforehand.”
