Scott salutes the impact of unsung hero in cup win

Interview with Scott Wagstaff after superb second-half turnaround at Portsmouth

Scott Wagstaff credited midfield colleague Tom Soares for helping him to dig deep and produce a performance that booked Wimbledon’s place in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

“Tom Soares has been excellent, especially on this occasion,” said Scott, in an interview with our premium iFollow Dons channel. “He was in there non-stop talking to all the lads, especially to me, as he was on at me the whole game and that helped. It’s a massive thing with the experience he’s got, it’s brilliant. It was a great ball for the goal and we thoroughly deserved the win.

The Dons went into the hat for the next round for the first time in eight attempts after turning it around in the second-half.

“The gaffer said to be positive at half-time,” said Scott. “It was cagey first half and their goal gave us another kick up the backside. We came out and were a lot more positive. We started to break the lines a lot more in midfield and were a bit more positive on the ball. It helped us by doing that, being positive; taking the game to them and it was a great win for us in the end.

“It’s an excellent feeling. The boys put in a great shift, especially after going 1-0 down, to show some great character to comeback. I think we thoroughly deserved the win and it was great to do it front of the away fans, which was another good turnout from them. Hopefully we can have a little run now!

“There were a lot of us making our full debuts and I was one of them. The other boys have been excellent, since they’ve joined. They’ve all taken to how the gaffer wants us to play and I think it showed out there, even though we changed system for the last 20 minutes to try and get the equaliser and the winner, but it managed to work. I thought all the new lads did themselves proud and we’ve put ourselves into the hat.

“We had the better chances in the first half and I should have scored one of them. The boys were saying one of them might have been over the line, but I wasn’t too sure. It’s just good to be getting into those positions and getting game time under my belt. Hopefully we’ll see a few of them go in soon.”
