Neal clinches signing number five

Scott Wagstaff joins AFC Wimbledon

11 July 2018

Neal Ardley's summer revamp has today gathered pace with the arrival of experienced midfielder Scott Wagstaff.

Scott is Wimbledon's fifth summer signing and our manager believes he will bring 'real energy' to the midfield.

Born in Maidstone, Scott started his career with Charlton, making 142 appearances for the Addicks, before switching to Bristol City in 2013. A very successful spell followed at City with Scott helping the club to promotion into the Championship two years later and to glory in the Football League Trophy.

For the past two seasons, Scott has been a regular in the Gillingham midfield, but he left Priestfield Stadium at the end of 2017/18.

Speaking to iFollow about the signing of Scott, Neal Ardley: "He is somebody we've liked for a while. We've done a fair bit of homework on him, as we always do with our players. This season, more than ever, we've tried to go for a profile and a type, rather than piecemeal the team together. These are things we learned from last season. I said that there would be slightly older players coming in and Scott is 28, but the one thing that the fans will appreciate is that he has got incredible work ethic, incredible stats.

"He is a wide right player, but in the last couple of seasons he has spent a lot of time as more of a defensive player and his stats have not been as good as you would expect from a wide player. We are going to try and get him back to the form of his Bristol City days when he was scoring goals and assisting goals. Certainly, he will be fighting for positions as an attacking player.

"Scott is a super-fit boy, he crosses the ball well, carries the ball well up the pitch, and he can dribble too. Our forwards will certainly feel the benefit of the crosses he puts in. I know our fans really like players who give 120 per cent and Scott always does that. He is one of the busiest players on the pitch, his stats are phenomenal. I spoke to Deji (Oshilaja) about his time playing with him and he raised his eyebrows and said, 'the guy runs forever, he doesn't stop'. Our fans will relate to that. He has a lot of quality as well and he will bring real energy to the midfield."
