The Dons this Saturday take on Halifax for a place in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup and it will bring back memories of a key match in Wimbledon’s history for our older supporters!
On 20 August 1977, Halifax Town were the visitors to Plough Lane for Wimbledon’s first Football League match. It was a cracking game that marked the club’s move into the big time with 4,616 spectators watching an entertaining 3-3 draw. Jeff Bryant, John Leslie, and Roger Connell struck the goals for Wimbledon.
A programme from that day, signed by our Club President Dickie Guy, who was in goal during that first season for Wimbledon in the old Division Four, is available on our AFC Wimbledon Ebay site. Visit the @AFCWIMbay website to register your interest.
Fast forward over 41 years from that first league match for Wimbledon and the BT Sport team will be hoping this Saturday’s match is every bit as entertaining! For all of us, just a Wimbledon win will do, and a place in the third round of the famous competition!
