Neal's squad update ahead of Scunthorpe

Manager interviewed before Saturday's home game

13 September 2018

Neal Ardley hopes that his players will be raring to go against Scunthorpe United after freshening up the squad in preparation for Saturday.

A tough match at Gillingham last time out ended in a much-needed victory and the manager hopes that Tom Soares (hamstring), James Hanson (calf), and Scott Wagstaff (calf) will be fit enough to take part against The Iron.

Speaking during his Thursday update for iFollow, Neal said: "Tom (pictured), James, and Scott all came off on Saturday, but we are positive about them and with a bit of luck we will have everyone. We will check on one or two tomorrow though. We had a couple of niggles at the start of the week. Ben Purrington clashed knees with Scott in training, so we were a bit worried about that, but he is fine now.

"We've had a really tough schedule of matches with Saturday and Tuesday games for a while now. We looked ahead and we wanted to try and give the boys a freshen up, both in their mental and physical states. We gave them an extra day off at the start of the week, but on the flip side of that you need to top up their fitness. The players worked extremely hard on Tuesday on lots of elements of the game, but particularly on their fitness."

Wimbledon will be searching for a first home win this season on Saturday, but the squad go into it boosted by a hard-fought away win at Gillingham, thanks to Joe Pigott's winner. It was the 24-year-old's 10th goal since joining Wimbledon in January and his fifth so far this season. When asked about the possibility of Joe scoring 10 or even 20 goals this season, Neal responded: "Yes, but we also want to see 10-12 goal James Hanson and the same with Kwesi Appiah and Jake Jervis. We want them all to get on the scoresheet. It's good that 'Pigs' is scoring, but I think they all will. We have to keep believing in them. We have to keep putting on sessions so that they get loads of finishing and stuff. The team have to keep going forward and trying to get chances. I am confident it will come because we are going to need them all to hit hot streaks on a regular basis."
