Wally Downes expressed his disappointment after watching Wimbledon let a 1-0 lead slip against Bristol Rovers today.
The Dons failed to put the game to bed after dominating the first-half and our manager felt that a lack of quality in possession let down his side.
Speaking during his post-match interview for iFollow, Wally said: “I’m disappointed that we didn’t see it out for the three points because I felt that we applied ourselves and just lacked a little bit of quality in their half with the ball. We had the opportunity to have the ball in their half, circulate it, and do better on the ball, but it didn’t happen. They came down the other end, a little bit of magic, and a very good goal to beat us.
“To progress as a team – we are a young team – we have to see it out all the way through. I’ve said it before - you don’t get paid at half-time. We won the first-half, but then we had to go and win the second-half. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see it through again. That’s the next step for us. We’ve got three more games, only one at home, but if we win two halves at home then I will be seeing progress again. If you miss tackles and give the ball away sometimes you get away with it and sometimes you don’t. Today we got punished.
“I hope the fans will stick with us because we are going to Luton and we want to win the game. If we win the game we come back here and we go again. We are going to need them.”
Wally brought on three substitutes in the second-half, including bringing on Michael Folivi for Joe Pigott, and he felt that provided Wimbledon with a bit more attacking impetus.
“We took the game to them after they equalised. The substitutes came on and I thought they did okay. We created a couple of chances and corners we should have done better from. If we could have given the fans a barnstorming finish that would have been great, but it wasn’t to be today.”
“It’s tough not to play Michael sometimes. Joe is scoring and James Hanson is doing well. Unfortunately, Michael has been the one who hasn’t been in, but he’s applied himself well during the week. He came on today and he was a handful.”
