Will confirmed as captain ahead of 2019/20 season

Home-grown defender will wear the captain's armband for new campaign

1 August 2019

Will Nightingale has been confirmed by Wally Downes as AFC Wimbledon’s captain for the new season.

The 23-year-old led us to that Great Escape last season, his leadership qualities playing a pivotal part in an unlikely survival from relegation that earned a fourth successive League One campaign.

Our manager felt that Will deserved the captaincy and it’s a big honour for a player who joined us at the age of just nine.

Wally said: “Will is a very wholehearted fella around the club, he gives his all on the pitch. He is growing into the job and I hope it gives him a bit more maturity because he hasn’t played a lot of games for a player of his age. The older lads listen to him, but he also listens to them as well, and he can still get a bit of guidance from the older players in the team.”

Will has so far made 93 appearances in all competitions for The Dons and he could surpass the century mark early next season.

A big congratulations to Will from all at AFC Wimbledon and we are sure that you will be leading us to plenty more victories in the future!
