Team of the decade: Your eleven

Penalty hero of 2011 partners Lyle up front

25 December 2019

Wimbledon supporters have voted in their hundreds and created The Dons team of the decade!

During December we gave fans control over team selection, with four candidates for every position that reflected on a memorable time in AFC Wimbledon history as we achieved two promotions.

There’s a strong representation from that day at Wembley in 2016, when we beat Plymouth Argyle to clinch promotion to League One. Barry Fuller, Paul Robinson, Darius CharlesJon Meades, Dannie Bulman, Jake Reeves, Andy Barcham and Lyle Taylor all figure in your team of the decade. Long-serving George Francomb, who missed out due to injury, did make your team selection on this occasion.

“I’m absolutely delighted! What an honour,” said Andy Barcham.

“A privilege to be voted in this team,” said former captain Barry Fuller.

“AFC Wimbledon and Millwall – two teams of the decade, not a bad Christmas present!! Must say the pleasure was all mine, lived and loved every minute!!” said a delighted Paul Robinson via his twitter account.

It wasn’t all about Wembley though. Dons fans didn’t forget the events of May 21, 2011 at the City of Manchester Stadium, when Danny Kedwell blasted Wimbledon back into the Football League from the penalty spot against Luton Town.

The choice of goalkeeper was always going to be a tough one, but Aaron Ramsdale emerged from an outstanding short-list of contenders. The England Under-21 international only joined us on loan last January, but made a significant contribution in securing our League One status for another season.

Hundreds took to the polls to register their choices. The tightest contest came for one of the centre midfield slots as Dannie Bulman (42.7% of the vote) just edged out Sammy Moore (41.2%).

We are, of course, eternally grateful to not only these eleven, but every player that has pulled on the yellow and blue of Wimbledon and contributed to our successes over the years.
