Former England defender salutes the Wimbledon story

Interview with Martin Keown and a behind-the-scenes look at Football Focus

Martin Keown had plenty of tussles against The Dons during his Arsenal days and the former England international has expressed his admiration for AFC Wimbledon’s battle against adversity.

Martin was part of BBC Sport’s broadcasting team for Football Focus, which was live from the Cherry Red Records Stadium before the Emirates FA Cup tie against Millwall.

Speaking during an interview for the official website, Martin said: “You can feel the warmth and emotion of the supporters and the local community. They’ve been through a lot over the years, they’ve fought for their club. It’s an incredible turnaround for them with six promotions. What was always evident in days gone by was the great determination and spirit that the club and the players always had. I think that’s left them in good stead over the years and is why they are back where they are now. Wimbledon refused to go away and I really wish them well.”

Since Saturday, the BBC have been in touch with the club to thank everyone for helping them to put on a cracking lunch-time show for a national TV audience. Of course, that wouldn’t have been possible without the help of supporters, who filled the bars beforehand!

We’ve put together a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of Football Focus and you can watch this, plus the interview with Martin Keown, below.
