Wally Downes was asked by his former boss Dave Bassett about his new role as AFC Wimbledon manager and about the old days back at Plough Lane in an entertaining feature on Soccer Saturday.
During the build-up to the West Ham game, Wally and Dave featured on the Sky Sports programme. The light-hearted chat gets underway with Wally talking about starting as an apprentice at Wimbledon on £5 a week wages and ends with former Wimbledon manager Dave Bassett recalling being on the receiving end of a prank in a Sheffield hotel!
When asked about his current job, Wally said: “It has come full circle, it reminds me of when I started at Wimbledon. This has taken me back and given me the same sort of hunger as I had when I walked through the door at Wimbledon all those years ago.
“Every day is an historic day when you are at a club that has come from absolute zero, from playing on a park field 17 years ago. Everything we do is making history, there is no story like it.”
