Dons edge out interest from other clubs to sign left-back

Wimbledon move quickly to bring in full-back from Birmingham

16 January 2019

AFC Wimbledon moved swiftly to seal a loan deal for Birmingham City’s Steve Seddon with the left-back’s impressive performances this season having attracted plenty of interest.

The 21-year-old has spent the first half of this season at League 2 Stevenage, making 25 appearances in all competitions and scoring three goals. Steve has joined on loan for the rest of this season after his loan stint at Stevenage ended yesterday.

Speaking about the signing, Wally Downes said: “Glyn was right on this from the early part of the week after Ben left. We knew we had to act quickly because if something happened to Tyler Garratt we would have had no cover whatsoever. It was great to get it over the line. He scores goals, which was the thing that really jumped out at me! He’s good at defending, but he’s also good at getting up the pitch. His deliveries into the box are very good and he’s a tenacious player.

“We’ve had him watched and we are aware of his attributes. He’s quick, has a good left foot, likes to score goals, and takes set plays. He is everything you are looking for in a full-back. He has come in and he will be battling for a place with Tyler.”

Steve started his career with Reading’s academy, before making the switch to Birmingham City in 2014. He has since made good progress with the Championship club, including being named on the bench for first-team fixtures last season.

The left-back is convinced that joining Wimbledon is the best option at this stage of his career.

Steve Seddon said: “A few clubs were sniffing around, but I heard Wimbledon were interested, so I told the people involved that I wanted to go to Wimbledon. I think it will be a good club for me.”
