Fond memories of Dons supporter June Whitfield

A tribute from Wimbledon manager Wally Downes

5 January 2019

All at AFC Wimbledon were sad to hear about the recent death of Dame June Whitfield, who was a big Wimbledon supporter.

June’s husband Tim Aitchison was a Wimbledon season ticket holder back in Plough Lane days and it didn’t take long for June to start showing her love for the Dons! An actress who lived in Wimbledon, June was asked to become the President of the Wimbledon Supporters Club and she had no hesitation in accepting the offer.

June had become known as a famous face around the club, meeting staff and players on a regular basis, including current Wimbledon manager Wally Downes.

Wally recalled: “She was an absolutely terrific woman. Everyone knew that she was on the TV and in the big sitcoms, but June and Tim were really big Wimbledon fans. June used to come and see us after games and she was very funny. Tim was a Wimbledon fan and she initially came along with him when they got very close, but she became a supporter too and followed our big FA Cup runs. The press became aware that she was a Wimbledon supporter, but she was always there for us. She would come in the bars for a chat with the lads after games and she was a brilliant woman.”

June was a well-known actress who starred in a host of TV programmes including Terry and June and Absolutely Fabulous. She was awarded the DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to drama and entertainment.

Our best wishes and deepest condolences are with June’s family at this difficult time.
