Shane can’t wait to swap the stands for the pitch

New signing on joining AFC Wimbledon

31 January 2019

Shane McLoughlin said he’s excited by the prospect of getting out on the pitch in a Wimbledon shirt after experiencing the ‘buzz’ of watching our big cup victory against West Ham.

Speaking during his first interview for iFollow after joining Wimbledon, Shane said: “I’m very excited to be here. I’ve been down here for a few days training and I got to meet all of the lads. I got to watch the game against West Ham at the weekend as well. It gave me a good taste of what’s to come and I’m really looking forward to getting going. I was sitting in the crowd for the West Ham game and it was a really big buzz back there!

The 21-year-old midfielder knows all about Wimbledon due to local family connections and he also previously played at Ipswich with fellow Irishman Dylan Connolly, who produced an impressive full debut against West Ham.

“When I heard that Wimbledon were interested in me I really wanted to come here,” said Shane. “I have an uncle that supported Wimbledon when he was a kid and I have family here as well.  I played with Dylan at Ipswich before he went back to Ireland. I seen that he came back to England and he ripped it up. He’s lightning quick.

“My agent gave me a call and said that I had a chance to come down for a few days of training to see if I could get a contract. After I spoke to the manager I had confidence that this place would be good for me and I hope that I will be good for the place as well.

“I just want to come here, get some games under my belt, and try to help the club out. I feel that I can help out and try to get us out of this position. The lads did well to try and kick-start our revival and I want to be a part of that.”

Shane can play in a variety of positions and he’s prepared to play anywhere to help the team out.

“Central midfield is my preferred position, but I just want to get some minutes wherever. I never give up and I feel that I am good on the ball. I feel that I can scrap if I need to scrap and get some goals from midfield as well.”
