Our Assistant Manager is enjoying every second in his new role

Nick Daws is excited at the prospect of starting his new role as Assistant Manager with a home game, when we entertain Lincoln City on Saturday.

“There’s nothing better than having a stadium that’s full and the Cherry Red Records Stadium is full of fantastic support,” said Nick. “I’m really looking forward to being a part of this fantastic story and journey.

“My last experience of Kingsmeadow as a coach was a 1-1 draw just after I’d taken over as caretaker manager at Scunthorpe eighteen months or so ago. We managed to nick a draw in the end. That was a great point for Scunthorpe in the scheme of things. Lyle Taylor was outstanding that day and we nicked a goal through Lee Novak.”

Nick, who initially joined Wimbledon as our Head of Recruitment, was speaking after a busy first day at the training ground where he was given a hands-on role by new Manager Glyn Hodges (pictured above).

“It’s been really good to be back out there,” said Nick “It’s been about fourteen months. There’s nothing like your first day back out on the grass after a long spell away, so it’s been nice. I’ve enjoyed what I’ve done with the recruitment role and will continue to do that and enjoy it, but this is the place that I am at my most comfortable.

“The gaffer said to get in there and get to know the players. I think that’s always important. I made a point of making sure that I knew everybody when I came in this morning, although I’ve been around it for ten months or so. It’s my first opportunity to work with the players, so it was good to get the hands dirty, literally!

“The response has been brilliant from the players coming back in this morning. The fear is that after a couple of days off – which they’ve earned because they’ve had a heavy schedule – that they come back in a little bit rusty, but fair play to the boys. They’ve come back in and showed the intensity, desire and commitment to win the games and buy into what we’re trying to achieve.”
