Dons striker goes out on loan

Tommy Wood joins Leatherhead

6 September 2019

Tommy Wood has been given an opportunity to gain more first-team experience by making a loan move to Leatherhead.

The 20-year-old striker, who is pictured celebrating his late equaliser in the pre-season match against Crystal Palace, has joined the BetVictor Isthmian Premier Division club for an initial 28 days on loan.

Wally believes that the loan move will be best for Tommy at this stage of his development.

"Tommy is young enough to come back to the club and know that he will be a part of it," said Wally. "He is a goalscorer and they are in short supply. He got a lot of goals at Burgess Hill Town last season. The level wasn't as good as we had hoped, but for a goalscorer to be scoring goals every week is what I want. He will come in and train with us so he will progress here on a daily basis with better players, but instead of him just having a reserve game every two weeks he could be banging in goals every week at a non league club. That would be terrific for him and for us."

Tommy, who has made three appearances for Wimbledon in competitive first-team fixtures, could make his Leatherhead debut on Saturday in the FA Cup First Round Qualifying Round at home to Lewes.
