Wordsworth named in strong squad for cup tie

First-team players pencilled in for match versus Met Police

23 September 2019

Anthony Wordsworth will be one of several first-teamers to feature for AFC Wimbledon at Imber Court in the London Senior Cup on Tuesday night (7.45 pm kick-off).

The experienced midfielder, who appeared as a late substitute versus Bristol Rovers on Saturday, will be handed an opportunity to gain more minutes on the way back from injury, as part of a strong Wimbledon line-up. Nik Tzanev, Paul Osew, Shane McLoughlin, Max Sanders, Kwesi Appiah, Joe Pigott, and Adam Roscrow will also be involved in the match versus Metropolitan Police.

Ayoub Assal, who has enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Met Police this season, will be in the Wimbledon squad for this match.

Lead Professional Phase Coach and Loan Manager Mark Robinson said: “There are a lot of first-teamers and young players involved on Tuesday night, so it’s a good opportunity for them all to get 90 minutes. It’s been a good experience for me working with senior players and we had a training session today with the starting 11 for tomorrow and a few of the other lads. It’s going to a strong line-up so we will be looking for them to show good professionalism, good skill, and put in a good performance.

“Ayoub is going to be substitute for us, so we will see if he gets on. Part of the agreement was that he would come back if we had any cup games or Under-23 friendlies that we wanted him for, so he will be back for us on Tuesday night.”

The match pairs together the finalists from 2014, Wimbledon having triumphed 2-1 against Met Police on that occasion. The match on Tuesday is a 7.45 pm kick-off at Imber Court with admission prices as follows:

Adults - £10

Over-65s and Under-18s - £5
