With the annual Volunteers’ Away Day at Wycombe Wanderers having been postponed, we thought we would take the opportunity to say a big thank-you to all those supporters that have helped our club in the past year.
Of course, the battle against COVID-19 has resulted in football and events such as our celebration for volunteers - which had been earmarked for today at Adams Park - being put on hold. However, that certainly doesn’t lessen our gratitude to the volunteers that make such a difference at our club.
Club Vice President Iain McNay, founder of Cherry Red Records who generously sponsor the event, put together the following message today.
“I have always been really happy that Cherry Red sponsor the Volunteers’ Away Day. There are so many supporters that help the club in so many different ways, but a lot of the tasks are ‘behind the scenes’ and don’t have much visible profile. However, these jobs are as important as any other. Saying ‘thank you’ is something that gets forgotten sometimes, especially when someone does the same job year upon year. There is always the danger that people feel taken for granted. So for me, the Volunteers' Away Day is a practical way of the club saying a tangible thank you to everyone.
“Over the years, the performance on the pitch on these days has been somewhat inconsistent. The last couple though have stayed in my memory. Oxford away last year was a very hard-earned point against the odds and one we really needed. And 2018 was fantastic with a dramatic last-minute 3-2 win at Walsall after being two goals down. This is what being a real fan is all about. All those trips up and down the motorways without much reward and then you get a win like that! It is something you never forget. Of course, today would have been a hard-fought battle against Wycombe, including a reunion with Darius Charles and Bayo. Let’s just hope we can all get our day out at Adams Park in the not too distant future.”
Every year volunteers including match day stewards, programme sellers, turnstile operators, and Golden Goal sellers get together for the event. Of course, we must also thank the volunteers that are making such a fantastic contribution as part of the Dons Local Action Group, supplying food and essential items for those in need.
