A battle for points after cup defeats for both clubs

Both managers on tonight's clash at Plough Lane

2 December 2020

Both clubs will tonight aim to put disappointing FA Cup knockouts behind them, as Wimbledon take on promotion contenders Peterborough United at Plough Lane.

Glyn Hodges expects Posh to be fired up by Darren Ferguson to bounce back after their shock 2-1 home defeat by Chorley in the Emirates FA Cup, but our manager is also expecting a reaction from his players after the Dons were eliminated by Crawley.

Alex Woodyard (pictured) will be aiming to put one over on his old club after he left Peterborough United in the summer. The experienced midfielder has settled in well here since making the switch to Wimbledon after making 69 appearances for Peterborough.

Below are quotes from both managers, plus more, ahead of the match versus Peterborough (6.00 pm kick-off).

Glyn Hodges

“They are a good side and that (defeat against Chorley) was a shock result. They had a strong team out as well. I am expecting a reaction from them, but I’m also expecting a reaction from us. We went out to League 2 opposition, though they deserved it so there were no grumbles from us, but it’s a nice opportunity to get back on track at our new stadium.

“Joe (Pigott) likes scoring here at Plough Lane, so we won’t stop him doing that! I keep saying to the players about set pieces and we don’t get enough goals from them. We’ve done extra work on set pieces and we need goals from everywhere. Joe has been terrific and hopefully he gets a couple more, but we can’t just rely on him.”

Darren Ferguson

“Saturday was a shambles. I had the players back in on the Sunday morning as there was no way I could let things stew until Monday. I had to get things off my chest. It’s been dealt with now and we move on. The players have been left in no uncertain terms that standards must get back to the levels of earlier in the season. It’s important to also remember we were very good against Plymouth in our last League One game.

“I expect a reaction and I am confident I will get one. Wimbledon always make life hard for us. I’m glad we are not playing at their old ground as had no luck in our last two trips there. It will still be tough though as they like to get the ball forward quickly and that’s something we will have to deal with.”

Previous meetings

The Dons have won on home turf against Peterborough on the last two occasions, both with 1-0 victories, and thanks to winning goals by Joe Pigott. Though Wimbledon’s record away at Peterborough is a different story with only one recent win – back in 2016 – the Dons will tonight be defending a proud home record against Peterborough. The first meeting between the two clubs when they were Division Four rivals back in 1980 ended in a 2-1 win for Wimbledon with Alan Cork scoring the decisive goal.
