Young Dons keeper earns England call-up

Matt Cox selected for national Under-17s squad

31 January 2020

Wimbledon Under-18s goalkeeper Matt Cox has been rewarded for his progress with a call-up for an England youth squad.

Matt has been named in the England Under-17s squad by Head Coach Kevin Betsy after his impressive rise through the academy ranks.

Our young keeper was named in a 22-player squad for three matches in Spain, starting with a game against Ukraine in Marbella on Thursday 6 February.

The fixtures will be a key part of England’s preparation for their UEFA U17 EURO Elite Round qualifiers, which will be played in March.

AFC Wimbledon Academy Manager Michael Hamilton said: "We as a club are really proud of Coxy's progression in his time with us, and this recognition comes as no surprise to us. As an academy, we’ve met with Matt and his family to ensure he remains focused and level-headed and the support network he has around him is fantastic. He is a credit to himself and his family. This is a huge pat on the back for Matt, but only one small step towards what he is capable of. I’d like to acknowledge Bayzo, Rob Tuvey, and Jordan Knight, as they have been pivotal in Matt's development since he has been here."

Congratulations Matt from all at AFC Wimbledon.

The full squad is as follows: Coniah Boyce-Clarke (Reading), Matthew Cox (AFC Wimbledon), Teddy Sharman-Lowe (Burton Albion), Nelson Abbey (Reading), Derrick Abu (Chelsea), Ethan Ingram (West Bromwich Albion), Nohan Kenneh (Leeds United), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool), Fedel Ross Lang (Manchester City), Imari Samuels (Reading), Omari Hutchinson (Arsenal), Nile John (Tottenham Hotspur), Aaron Ramsey (Aston Villa), James Sweet (Arsenal), Harvey Vale (Chelsea), Abdul Abdulmalik (Millwall), Louie Barry (Aston Villa), Amadou Diallo (West Ham United), Lewis Dobbin (Everton), Fionn Mooney (Crystal Palace), Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich), Rico Richards (West Bromwich Albion).
