Rewind: Marching towards the title and a Great Escape

A look back at Wimbledon games on 23 March

23 March 2020

The date of 23 March brought two Wimbledon victories in the past that were significant for different reasons.

Seven years ago, a 2-0 home victory against Morecambe provided a vital three points in the battle to stay in League Two. Kevin Sainte-Luce (pictured) opened the scoring, before providing another demonstration of his exuberant celebrations with those trademark somersaults! A penalty by Jack Midson sealed the points that were much-needed in a season that ended with our dramatic last-day survival against Fleetwood.

The date of 23 March 2004 brought a victory for AFC Wimbledon that was in stark contrast to the above, as The Dons closed in on winning the Combined Counties League. Goals by Gavin Bolger, Darren Dobinson, and Kevin Cooper secured a 3-1 win at Frimley Green. The season ended with AFC Wimbledon's one and only Combined Counties League title and those memorable terrace chants of 'We won it one time!'

Take a look below at those extravagant celebrations by Kevin Sainte-Luce.
