A surprise gesture for Robbo!

Head Coach presented with a framed shirt

Mark Robinson recently received a welcome surprise when he was walking along the street close to his home!

Offering a reminder of the unique spirit created by the FA Youth Cup team from 2015/16, Robbo was presented with a framed shirt by members of that squad to congratulate him on becoming Head Coach.

Seanan McKillop, who emerged as a real leader in the heart of midfield during the FA Youth Cup run that included superb victories at Newcastle United and Watford, said: “As a group, we had such a strong relationship with Robbo, both on and off the pitch. If we’re all honest this is only a small token of what he gave us as young men growing up. He taught us that who we are off the pitch will impact on who we become on the pitch. Actions speak louder than words and us giving Robbo a gift hopefully made him understand how much we appreciate him and how happy we are for him. He’s an inspirational figure for all of us. Even though we’ve not been together at the club for five years, we still respect him as highly as ever.”

Wimbledon’s stirring cup run during 2015/16 captured the hearts of Dons supporters with a 3,455 crowd at the Cherry Red Records Stadium watching the young Dons eventually bow out to a Chelsea youth side that included Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham.

Academy Manager Michael Hamilton added: “Whilst our remit as an academy is to produce players for the first team, our job is to create an environment that develops great people, and memories that live forever. These boys coming together to surprise a man they saw as more than a coach highlights the bond and connection this group had, not only with Mark, but each other, and also the club. Let’s not forget a lot of these boys didn’t get the professional contracts they wanted and for those that did, there was not the happy ending with the club that was planned. What they did have was a bond and a culture that is evident. This culture is what we as an academy have been built upon and with all that comes into the ‘professional’ game we will not lose it.”
